FreeArc

FreeArc is a modern general purpose archiver. The main advantage of the program is a rich set of compression methods, due to which FreeArc demonstrates a high compression ratio and enviable performance.

FreeArc is 2-5 times faster than the best packers with the same compression ratio.

Benefits

  • Open source
  • Graphical and console versions for Linux and Windows
  • Wide range of compression algorithms: LZMA, PPMD, TrueAudio, multimedia compression algorithms
  • Wide range of filters: REP, DICT, DELTA, BCJ and LZP
  • Special fast compression algorithms: GRZIP for texts and Tornado for binary data
  • A total of 11 algorithms and filters (compared to 3 in 7-zip and 7 in RAR)
  • Special sorting mode, thanks to which files of the same type are compressed together, which increases the compression ratio
  • Amazing performance: On average, FreeArc runs 2-5 times faster than programs of a similar class (ccm, 7-zip, rar, uharc -mz, pkzip) with a comparable compression ratio
  • Launching external archivers and filters (the default configuration contains settings for Precomp, ECM, CCM (x), PPMonstr, Durilca, LPAQ, UDA and PAQ)

Functionality

  • Solid archives with smart update
  • AES encryption / Blowfish / Twofish / Serpent
  • Modules for connecting to FAR and Total Commander
  • Self-extracting (SFX) archives and installers
  • Working with archives via the HTTP protocol (getting a list of files, unpacking)
  • Restore archives
  • Testing archives before and after any operation
  • Moving files to the archive, merging archives, re-archiving, locking and commenting the archive
  • Selecting files by size, creation time, name, attributes
  • Support for base directories on disk and in the archive, automatic generation of the archive name
  • Flexible customization

To date, FreeArc lacks the following features available in RAR and 7-zip: support for multivolume archives, 64-bit version, support for extended attributes NTFS, BCJ2, data segmentation.
